For the third straight season, Nikolai improved his GAA. Fourth straight for SV%. Nikolai played a full slate of games and carried the Columbus Blue Jackets to the playoffs. Nikolai posted a league-best 8 shutouts, finished third (.914 vs .916) in save percentage while playing more games than the two goalies ahead of him. He also posted the most wins in the league by a goaltender.
Khabibulin recorded his fewest losses in a season in four years, and finished third in Vezina scoring, arguably should have won the Vezina. From our point of view, he's just getting started on the second act of his career, and at 35, has a few more excellent seasons ahead of him before father time begins to catch up.
Nikolai showed no signs of slowing down, and no signs of deteriorating skills over the course of the season. He remains one of the best in the game. He should not be rated lower than he was last season.
